I occupy a strategic and entrepreneurial global leadership role for two cardiovascular-related medicines within AstraZeneca, where I’ve worked for four and a half years. In effect, this means I am the brands’ CEO, with overall responsibility for each aspect of the value chain. This includes disciplines ranging from manufacturing and supply to regulatory, clinical, pricing and access, as well as commercialisation and sales input.
My day-to-day job involves making sure we are on track with our investigations for therapies that address cardiovascular diseases related to lipids and anti-platelets.
We can make a tangible difference to many, many patients. It is a multi-faceted function, so challenges crop up that make the work very exciting. I interact with colleagues from all departments, with all sorts of backgrounds and mindsets. Someone from supply or manufacturing may think so differently from someone in commercial or clinical. I love the culture here – I learn a lot and that’s the nice part.

My background is as a cardiologist and emergency physician. It was while pursuing an academic career in Berlin and New York, where I graduated, that I thought about moving into the pharmaceutical industry. Once I joined the industry, I found I really enjoyed it and have never regretted making that change. We can make a tangible difference to many, many patients. It far over-reaches the world that I was in, where – although we helped people immediately – it was on a much smaller scale. I have met many different people, with different ways of working and different cultures – it is challenging, but intellectually very stimulating.
